About Us What is the Southwestern Pennsylvania Household Hazardous Waste Task Force?The Southwestern Pennsylvania Household Hazardous Waste Task Force’s mission is to facilitate the proper collection and disposal of household hazardous waste and minimize its generation through education in Southwestern Pennsylvania.The SW PA HHW Task Force is comprised of members from profit, non-profit, academia, government and environmental organizations across Southwestern PA. The History of the Task Force Every day, local municipal officials and environmental organizations in southwestern Pennsylvania receive inquiries from residents asking how they can dispose of materials that cannot be placed in regular trash or recycling collections. Concerned homeowners are searching for environmentally responsible methods for disposing of common household products such as paint, solvents, automotive fluids, pesticides, insecticides and cleaning chemicals. As a result of an exploratory meeting held at Carnegie Mellon University in 2001, the Southwestern PA Household Hazardous Waste Task Force was formed to fill the need to secure funding, organize events and create a partnership of individuals representing governmental, private and public organizations. Administration The Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC), a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the environment, serves as the SW PA HHW Task Force project administrator. PRC's responsibilities include facilitating meetings, organizing collection events, spearheading fundraising and volunteer efforts, and developing education and outreach materials. Funding The SW PA HHW Task Force is a project of the Pennsylvania Resources Council (www.prc.org), a registered 501 (c) (3) and one of the oldest non-profit environmental organizations in the Commonwealth. The SW PA HHW Task Force is always seeking funding from corporate, foundation and individual sources so that we may continue to provide safe and economical disposal of HHW materials to residents throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.
